Past events include:
HUMAN RIGHTS FORUMS FOR TAFE
The Equity Research Centre recently hosted two forums on behalf of the Office of
Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE) on the implications for TAFE of the Victorian
Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities 2006.
The 9th July forum was directed towards senior managers in TAFE, the 18th July forum
was directed towards coordinators, practitioners and support staff. Both were well
attended and well received by all participants.
The forums were specially tailored to provide a detailed overview of the new legislation -
Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities - and its implications for the
education sector, especially TAFE.
The presenters were Philip Lynch, Director of the Human Rights Law Resource Centre,
Australia's first specialist human rights legal service and Alyena Mohummadally,
Solicitor and Community Legal Education Officer at Blind Citizens Australia.
Weaving with Light – Advanced Technology in Social Enterprise
The 'Weaving with Light – Advanced Technology in Social Enterprise' conference was
held on Thursday 19th April and proved to be a most interesting day. Participants
were treated to a number of intriguing and thought provoking presentations. Sheila
Kennedy from Boston, USA talked about her work with portable light in indigenous
communities in Mexico, Meredith Gurranggurrang described the use of technology in
Arnhemland, students from the Re-Skin project demonstrated their wearable technology
projects, Dr. Peter Binks from Nanovic explained nanotechnology for us and Dr. Rob
Sparrow from Monash University discussed the issue of the ethics of nanotechnology.
Participants were also able to try out an play with a variety of materials courtesy
of Nanovic and to see products already utilising nanotechnology principles. Many
contacts were made among participants and planning is underway for continuing the
valuable networking and discussions about using advanced technology in social enterprises.
